I have spent many years studying Carlyle Brown’s life and work. My article ”Carlyle Brown: Under The Influence Of The Fantastic” was published in the Spring of 2021 in the Journal of Cornwall Contemporary Arts. Further light has been shed on this extraordinary artist with subsequent publications by my esteemed colleagues Peter Benson Miller and Giulia Tulino. Carlyle Brown began his career as an artist under the influence of the Russian expatriate painter Pavel Tchelitchew. By the time of Brown’s death in 1963, at the age of 44, he had established his own identity and was recognized for his masterful draftsmanship, superb painting, exquisitely poised compositions and eerily enigmatic subjects.
