I just discovered that the essays that I wrote some years ago for Contemporary Fashion--republished later as the St. James Encyclopedia of Fashion--are available online. The Encyclopedia was edited by the late Richard Martin who was the curator at the Costume Institute, Metropolitan Museum of Art.
